Most weekday mornings, I need a
handsome drill sergeant leaning over my bed, staring me in the face shouting “Get up, girl! You know you don’t have time for this! Get your ass out of bed and put your game face on!” Ohh God! What can I skip just to sleep in for five more minutes? I won’t do my brows. Nope, not an option. Maybe skip washing my hair? Dry shampoo. Yes, good! What dress have I not worn yet this week so I don’t have to figure out a top and a bottom?
Sound familiar? I have this conversation with myself every morning before I finally roll out of bed, feed the dog, start my coffee and go assess the disaster that is my face and hair in the bathroom mirror.
No matter how much of a rush I’m in, I somehow always manage to get in my full routine. Every minute counts in the morning and I don’t skip a beat when it comes to my makeup. Here’s the thing, I believe that the way I feel I look, reflects the way that I act and feel throughout the day. If I look put together, I feel put together. It’s all perception people! For you and your coworkers! They don’t gotta know your bed’s not made at home! Skip it! At least you look like you’ve got your ish together from the outside! I get it – not everyone is going to agree with me here but just hear me out. Elizabeth Taylor famously said “Pour yourself a drink (of coffee ladies, it’s still early), put on some lipstick and pull yourself together.”
There is power in every woman that leaves the house with her head held high. That is not a quote. I know this from experience.
Today, I want to share with you the three guidelines I follow every morning for a polished look: aka my 9-5 game face.
ONE – Conceal. No matter how much sleep I got the night before, the most important thing for me is to even out my skin tone. I prefer full coverage foundation, others may prefer a powder foundation or a BB cream. A favorite of mine during the dry winter months is the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream. I mix this with my Cover FX Custom Color Drops for additional coverage but that alone is a great option to add hydration and natural-looking coverage to the skin. A little concealer under the eyes and a nude eyeliner in the waterline corrects the last bit of redness peaking through.
TWO – Frame. And by frame I mean outline. And by outline I mean brows, lashes and eyes. For years I never touched my eyebrows. I maintained them so I didn’t look like Bert and Ernie but until a year or so ago when brows became a BFD I didn’t pay much attention to them. Now, I realize the impact they make on framing my face. Additionally, I love the natural look of no eyeliner and natural mascara but do me a favor and do half of your face one morning. Fill in one brow, line one eye and coat your eyelashes on one eye. LOOK at the difference! HELL-O! Johnny Nash is singing to you “I can see
you clearly now that you’ve framed your face the rain is gooone.”
THREE – Bronze & Glow. Some part of me feels just one teeny step closer to J.Lo just SAYING the word “glow“. Can I just ask all of my Minnesotan girls a question? Do you enjoy looking pasty as hell for 6 months out of the year? I didn’t think so. We all love the look and glow of a fresh tan after a nice warm vacation. It’s been a minute since I’ve gone on vacation so yet again, in one more area of my life I am going to have to fake it ’till I can make it! I hit the perimeter of my face, jawline and lightly sculpt my cheeks with my favorite bronzer, Ambient by Hourglass each morning. This adds warmth and dimension to your face.
2016 is the year of the highlight. 2015 it was “brows on fleek”. This year, you better be able to see your cheekbones shining from outer-f’kn-space. Becca Shimmering Skin Perfecter in Opal will get you there.
I’m getting a bit excited. Remember, we are talking about a professional look! Hitting your cheekbones ever so lightly with a highlight will have the rest of the women in that perfectly lit board room thinking “My God. That woman is getting 8 hours of sleep, taking her vitamins and drinking her 8 glasses of water a day. How does she do it!”
It’s the cherry on the top. The frosting on the cupcake. The strawberry in the champagne. The Channing Tatum dancing WITH his shirt off! Ya feel me?
Final note, these are the bare minimum things that I do each day. Adding some eye shadow and a lip gloss complete the look! We all pick and choose what things are our must haves when it comes to makeup, for me I don’t leave many steps out of the equation. High maintenance, is that what they call it?
Okay girls. This has been fun. I hope you feel that you have all learned a few tricks of my trade! I am loving every minute of this new blogging life and hope you are enjoying the journey with me.
